A precious moment for a Witsie

Wits staff member Precious Khumalo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
It is graduation season at Wits University and jovial festivities are all over campus. Wits conferred over 5000 qualifications during the year’s first graduation season. Wits’ very own Precious Khumalo took to the stage to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Psychology and Marketing.
Khumalo is an Operations Administrative Assistant in the University’s Central Printing and Mailing Unit responsible for maintaining healthy relationships with university stakeholders. Khumalo, who has worked for Wits for eight years, jumped at the opportunity to pursue her studies after being made a permanent employee. She enrolled for her undergraduate degree with the Wits Plus Centre for Part-Time Studies which offer selected part-time undergraduate degrees, postgraduate programmes and short courses on a part-time and after-hours basis on the University campus, as well as a suite of online courses.
In pursuing her degree, Khumalo was eager to upskill herself and prepare for a brighter future in her career.
Studying while working full-time can be a daunting task, but Khumalo kept her eye on the prize. One of the biggest challenges of working and studying is managing the demands of both your studies and work outputs. Careful planning, time management and a supportive work and family structure can be helpful.
Khumalo was accompanied by her mother, Mmapula Regina Mose, who is also a Wits staff member and husband, Boitumelo Aphane to the graduation ceremony. Both have supported Khumalo throughout her studies.
Beaming with pride, Khumalo’s mother congratulated her daughter on her qualification. “It is lovely to see all her hard work and dedication to her studies pay off,” says Mose.
A new mum herself, Khumalo tells how studying while balancing work and a new family was stressful and hard on her social life.
“I am grateful for the family support I received during my studies”, she says, “attending classes, and learning to manage my time for work, studies and family was central to my success as a student,” concluded Khumalo.
