Wits nets a victory over Central University

- Andre Bester

FNB Wits rugby silences Central University of Technology with a string of scores.

Wits University got the monkey of their backs by scoring their maiden Varsity Cup victory in style on Monday night by convincingly beating the FNB CUT Ixias 43-3 in Johannesburg.

The injection of pace and skills from the demunitive Wandisile Simelane(Bachelor of Arts) opened the scoring early and from then on FNB Wits did the damage. The Witsies scored four tries thereafter controlling every facet of the game.

Lock Graham Logan (Master of Science in Medicine) bulldozed his way over and they kept the Ixias under pressure until the final minutes when reserve prop Ameer Williams (Bachelor of Arts) planted his big right arm over the whitewash. Simelane showed his class early and while the backs didn’t score another try they played the game at pace and only a few inaccurate passes prevented them from scoring a few more tries.

Captain Warren Gilbert (Bachelor of Arts) controlled the game beautifully behind his pack and played on the advantage line for one of his better performance in the competition.

This victory comes at the right time after two gutsy performances in the first two rounds of the competition and one senses that they will score a few upsets in the weeks to come.

Witsies are away for the next two matches and return for their home game on 13 March against Nelson Mandela Metropolitan  University of Technology. This match will be televised.

Wits Scorers: Tries - Wandisile Simelane (Bachelor of Arts), Graham Logan (Master of Science in Medicine), Constant Beckerling (Bachelor of Science in Engineering), Justin Brandon (Bachelor of Science in Property Studies), Ameer Williams (Bachelor of Arts). Conversions: Warren Gilbert (4) (Bachelor of Arts). Penalties: Gilbert (2).
